Why Bernard Sleijster chooses to support health and wellness

In a previous post, about how marketing can change the world for the better, I talked a little bit about the industries that I support through my work in marketing. Currently I am working with companies that focus on sustainability, cleantech and wellness and hospitality.

So why did I choose to support the health and wellness industries?

“We are at a pivotal movement where people worldwide are taking steps to change the way they live, work, and play, while at the same time governments are finally recognizing the value of investing in prevention to lower healthcare costs,” said Susie Ellis, Chairman and CEO of the Global Wellness Institute.
Everybody wants to look better, feel better, look younger and be healthier inside and out. Nowadays we have many proven methods to help people do just that, and the growth is in this industry has been huge in the recent years.
A study conducted by a non-profit research firm SRI International, revealed that the health and wellness is one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing industries.
The Global Wellness Institute revealed in 2014 that the global wellness market is now worth $3.4 trillion, making it nearly three times larger than the $1 trillion worldwide pharmaceutical industry.

What exactly is “wellness”?

This is a very broad term, but here are 10 bullet points that help to narrow it down:
• alternative and complementary medicine
• beauty and anti-aging
• fitness and mind-body
• healthy eating
• nutrition and weight loss
• preventative and personalized health
• spa
• thermal and mineral springs
• wellness real estate
• wellness tourism
• workplace wellness
There is much scientific evidence that supports the theory that most of our health issues are related to food and nutrition, as well as environmental toxicity. There is also a growing in the understanding of our bodies natural abilities to heal itself through “alternative” methods.
The wellness industry is popular because it gives the body exactly what it needs for a good quality of life and optimal health. In the last few centuries, medicine has focused on curing diseases, but now people are starting to focus more on preventative measures, though nutrition and natural healing methods.
So I choose to support this industry not just because it’s one of the fastest growing industries, but because I firmly believe in preventative healthcare over “sick care”. I feel that through marketing wellness companies, we can spread the right message out to as many people as possible, and hopefully create a happy and healthy life for as much of the world’s population as possible.
